Day Care Rejects Invitation to Come Back to Philadelphia Pool

Tags: , , , ,

A few days ago I wrote about the Philadelphia swim club accused of racial discrimination. What happened was the manager of the facility asked the mostly minority day camp to leave the facility after other parents voiced concern that the day camp might “change the complexion” of the pool.

After the story got a little publicity, the pool’s representatives wanted to make right by the campers, and invited them back. But now, the day camp is rejecting the invitation to come back and swim at the pool.

“Parents, do you want your children to return to the Valley Swim Club?” Alethea Wright of Creative Steps asked parents who attended a news briefing with her Monday. When none of them raised their hands, Wright said, “As you can see, the vote is unanimous.”

I don’t blame them at all.

“Swimming privileges for about 65 children from Creative Steps were revoked after one visit to the club, on June 29. Some black and Hispanic children said white club members made racist comments to them, asking why black children were there and raising concerns that “they might steal from us.”

The swim club’s director John Duesler stated that “safety and crowding — not racism — prompted the cancellation.” He also stated that the club canceled on two other day care centers because of safety and crowding.

Creative Steps Daycare officials dispute the statement that the pool was overcrowded.

Philly Swim Club Accused of Racism

A private swim club in Philadelphia is at the center of controversy regarding racial discrimination. The club allegedly discriminated against minority children from a city day camp.

Apparently the day camp had paid the club to let them use the pool a number of times throughout the summer, but after returning for the second time the initial visit on June 29th, the day camp’s attendees were denied re-entry, and the camp was refunded their check of $1,0950.

“I get a phone call from the board chair saying, ‘You’re no longer going to be able to swim here,’” said Wright, adding that she was not given a specific reason. “The other members were taking their children out while our children were swimming.”

Wright stated that several of the African American children from her daycamp overheard a white woman complaining about their presence at the pool.

“John Duesler, president of the swim club, told FOX 29 in Philadelphia that the club ‘underestimated the impact the children would have.’ They ‘fundamentally changed the atmosphere’ at the pool, he said.”

“Duesler insisted that race had “nothing” to do with the club’s decision to rescind the summer-long agreement, but admitted that several club members had complained about the group. Duesler said those complaints were not race-related.”

Meanwhile, the camps’ official’s aren’t convinced. “If the children didn’t misbehave, we paid our membership in full, here’s the check to prove it, what else could it be? We were the only minorities there.”

Legal action against the swim club is being considered.
