So today reports are surfacing that Bernard Madoff, the perpetrator of the largest Ponzi scheme in history, is dying of cancer in a North Carolina Federal Prison.

The 71-year-old is reportedly taking 20 pills a day to treat his cancer and has told other inmates that he does not have long to live.

“Lawyers for Madoff have not yet responded to the reports, although they earlier declined to respond to questions on the matter when speculation arose earlier this year that he was suffering from pancreatic cancer. His wife, Ruth, has also declined to answer questions regarding the matter.”

“Madoff is currently serving a 150-year sentence in Butner, N.C., for swindling $65 billion from thousands of investors. He pleaded guilty to 11 felony charges in March and was sentenced in June.”

It is not been stated what from of cancer Madoff is suffering from, but there have been reports that he has been attending “Native American religious purification ceremonies” that use heat rocks and ceremonial pipes.

“Madoff is also being recruited by various prison “gangs,” and some prisoners have been cooking him sandwiches in their cells.”

Bernard Madoff Arrives in Federal Prison - Game Over

Tags: , , ,

In what is hopefully going to be the last post regarding this case, the disgraced financier Bernard Madoff arrived at federal prison today in Butner, North Carolina, where he will serve what is humanly possible of his 150 year sentence.

“Federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Linda Thomas says Madoff arrived at the Butner facility Tuesday morning, after a brief stay at an Atlanta prison while in transit from a federal jail in New York City.”

“Madoff has a projected release date of November 14, 2139, assuming he gets early release credit for good behavior while in prison.”

He is now listed in the Bureau of Prisons records as prisoner number 61727-054.

Tough way to go out, especially when you already had everything you could ever dream of.

Throwing the Book at O.J. Simpson

Tags: , , , , ,

Call me crazy but I feel sorry for O.J. Simpson. Granted, I’m the kind of girl who feels sorry for that one person who is crucified by the majority. And I know it is believed by most that he committed murder. Still…his suffering is hard to watch. Now, if he killed my sister or any other family member, I’d be singing a different tune. You can bet your ass! But, it’s still hard to see a human being suffer for so many years. And yes, he has suffered even though he wasn’t behind bars.

Therefore, when Judge Jackie Glass threw the book at Simpson, I felt empathy for him. On December 5, 2008, Simpson walked into a courtroom in chains, looking down and out. Reportedly, he choked up when pleading with a judge to spare him.

“I didn’t want to steal anything from anyone. … I’m sorry, sorry,” Simpson cried.

Known for giving tough sentences, Judge Glass stated that his crime was a violent confrontation, one gun was drawn, and someone could have been killed. She added that the evidence was overwhelming…the planning, the confrontation and the aftermath all caught on audio or videotape.

Glass gave him a series of consecutive and concurrent sentences that even confused attorneys over how much time, exactly, Simpson would serve. Although he “could serve” up to 33 years, the former football player is eligible for parole after nine years, said Elana Roberto, the judge’s clerk.

Did this have something to do with Simpson’s past? According to Glass, no way. “I’m not here to try and cause any retribution or any payback for anything else,” she said.

And Fred Goldman had this to say: “We are thrilled, and it’s a bittersweet moment. It was satisfying seeing him in shackles like he belongs.”

The Goldman’s also stated that they believe it was their pursuit of his assets from their $33.5 million wrongful-death judgment that “pushed him over the edge,” leading Simpson to commit the robbery to recover some of his sports memorabilia.

Prison for Pumping: Judge Thompson Exposed

Tags: , , , ,

After former court reporter, Lisa Foster, was fired, she fought back and filed a wrongful termination lawsuit. Working for Creek County District Judge Donald Thompson who was sentenced to prison after being convicted of indecent exposure, like his secretary who filed a suit, Foster claimed that Thompson fired her because she had reported his behavior to the Oklahoma Council on Judicial Complaints. Referring to his conduct as “utterly intolerable in a civilized community,” Thompson was accused of “using a penis pump while presiding over trials,” stated Law.com.

Yes, you heard it right…a penis pump.

Convicted by a Creek County jury in June 2006, the judge was sentenced to four consecutive one-year prison terms. He was also fined $40,000. And after serving 20 months, he was released but had to register as a sex offender. Meanwhile, Foster settled her case for $170,000.

Shorter Sentences for Crack Users

Tags: , ,

The long-lasting controversial issue regarding prison sentencing is drug abuse. Should someone get locked up for 10 years for a drug related crime, which can sometimes be more extreme than a convicted murderer? While drug abuse is a huge problem in the world today, is incarceration the right step to take regarding the future? When drug addiction is concerned, if possession or other non-violent crimes are committed, rehab (in my opinion) seems more plausible than imprisonment. However, the problem is that drugs are often the root cause of other crimes. And prison helps perpetuate crime. It’s a catch-22 but still…prison is PROVEN to raise the bar when it comes to criminal activity. Rehabalitation, on the other hand, doesn’t have an incredibly high success rate but it is a safer bet than locking someone up in a corrupt world and throwing away the key indefinitely.

In the last six months, federal district courts have received 13, 170 motions for reductions in sentences by offenders convicted of a crack cocaine offense, and have granted relief in 9,703 stated the U.S. Sentencing Commission.

According to the National Law Journal, “The retroactive application of a crack cocaine amendment to the Federal Sentencing guidelines lowered base offense levels in an effort to address the 100-to-1 ratio, and racial disparity in the sentencing of those convicted of crack offenses and those convicted of cocaine powder offenses.”

What does this mean? It is the push for more leniency. However, shorter sentences and no rehab equal a disaster. Along with the shorter sentences to balance things out racially, a better program to assist drug addicts in prison as well as once they are released into the outside world is crucial in keeping our streets as safe as possible.

E-Gold Execs Singing the Jailbird Blues

Tags: , , ,

Three principle executives of E-Gold Limited are facing some serious jailtime after pleading guilty to conspiring to engage in money laundering and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. The three executives in the hotseat are Dr. Douglas Jackson, Principal Director of E-Gold and CEO of Gold & Silver Reserve Incorporated, and two of his Senior Directors (Barry Downey and Reid Jackson). Brought against them by the Department of Justice, this is no laughing matter. And if you think they’ll end up going to some white-collar jail like Martha Stewart…think again. White collar crimes don’t get the jailbird, A-list treatment they once received. In other words, the VIP treatment in prison has been reduced to only a select few celebrities.

Facing a fine of $3.7 million, the corporations involved (E-Gold and Silver Reserve) have already agreed to pay $1.75 million. Downey and Reid are looking at a max of 5 years and a $25,000 fine and Jackson may be headed to the big house for up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $500,000.
