An 89 year old retired autoworker from Ohio named John Demjanjuk is wanted on a Munich arrest warrant that accuses him of 29,000 counts of accessory to murder.
Demjanjuk allegedly worked as a guard at the Sobibor death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland.
This is the first time I’ve heard of this but apparently this has been going on for a while. Demjanjuk has already asked the United States to block his deportation to Germany, which was declined. His appeal was also declined as well.
“Demjanjuk remained inside his suburban Cleveland home Monday until 3 p.m. when he was escorted out through his garage and immediately into the ambulance.”
“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials went to Demjanjuk’s home Friday to serve a government notice asking that he surrender.”
Demjanjuk is rejecting the German allegations that he was a camp guard and is maintaining that he was held by the Soviets as a prisoner of war.
His family has been battling the deportation and is claiming that he is in poor helath and will not survive the trip back.
“Once in Germany, Demjanjuk will be brought before a judge and formally charged. He will also be given the opportunity to make a statement to the court, in keeping with normal justice procedure, German Justice Ministry spokesman Ulrich Staudigl said.”
In Germany, Demjanjuk is expected to be held in the medical unit of a munich prison. The German government has said that preperations have been made at the facility to ensure that he gets the care that he needs.
