N.Y. Giants Receiver Accidentally Shoots Himself in the Thigh

Posted on 01 December 2008

I’m sure it was an eventful Thanksgiving weekend for everyone between the driving, meal preparation and dealing with that one irritating relative, but for Plaxico Burress, the NY giants Receiver, eventful is an understatement.  Not only is his career in jeopardy, but his freedom as well.

“The Giants’ dream season was thrown into turmoil yesterday when Super Bowl star Plaxico Buress accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Manhattan nightclub.”

The night started off by Plaxico initially being turned away from the LQ Nightclub in midtown because he was packing heat, but Buress, who was sporting flashy jewelry and carrying loads of cash, convinced club management that he needed the gun to protect himself.

“As Burress was being led into a VIP area, with a drink in his hand, the gun slipped down his pants leg. He reached for the weapon, but fumbled it and it went off, sources said. The bullet tore through Burress’ already injured right thigh, police said.”

Antonio Pierce, Plaxico’s teammate, the N.Y. Giants Middle Linebacker and defensive anchor, was also implicated in the melee’ for allegedly trying to hide his teammates gun after he had shot himself.  It is unclear at this point if charges will be filed against him, but Pierce did play in the Giants 24-3 victory over the redskins yesterday.

Amidst all the controversy, Plaxico has stated that he is “Not Worried” and going to plead “Not Guilty” to possession of an illegal firearm.

Well Plaxico should be worried. N.Y.’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg is outraged and is demanding for Plaxico to be prosecuted “to the fullest extent of the law”.

“A mayoral spokesman said Bloomberg was referring to the state law he successfully pushed through Albany last year that changed the penalty for illegal possession of a loaded illegal handgun from a one-year sentence to a mandatory minimum 3 1/2-year sentence.”

Lets be thankful that he only hurt himself in this boneheaded mistake. Should be interesting to see how this (and the Giants season) pans out.
